EAL
At the Sir John Colfox Academy, we are proud of the multicultural and multilingual background of our students. We passionately believe that all of our students should be given the opportunity to have their cultural and linguistic heritage recognised and valued. Some of our students speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). Where students need additional support to help them with their English-language skills, we will do our best to support them in order to help them be a successful part of our student community.
We aim to work with our EAL students, both by offering targeted support in the classroom and running personalised interventions. Every EAL student is different, with their own strengths and areas for support.
STUDENTS WITH EAL – WHAT WE OFFER:
- Quality first teaching – all teaching at the Sir John Colfox school will take into account the specific EAL learning needs of students
- Students with EAL are offered a one-to-one meeting with the EAL co-ordinator to identify if there is a need for support. If needed, this will include assessing a student’s English language proficiency
- The EAL co-ordinator will contact parents and will be available to help organise support and intervention
- Where the need for support is identified, a bespoke support programme will be put in place for students
- Support could include targeted resources for students to use in lessons, English tuition in small groups, or individual intervention programmes.
If you have any questions about EAL at The Sir John Colfox Academy, please contact the EAL co-ordinator, Neil Allies ( alliesn@colfox.dorset.sch.uk ).
